Thank You – A Letter To Our Patrons

Dear Patrons,

We know that you support the William Fogg Library. We hope that you appreciate the efforts that go into preserving the original ambiance of the historic building while incorporating new technologies into the services and programs we provide. Our staff constantly evaluates how we might improve the library experience and keeps our materials and offerings up to date.

To maintain this level of service takes money. As you may know, for the past several years the Town has cut our request for additional funding. The trust that we draw from to cover library operations and maintenance cannot cover all of our needs.  Portions of these funds are restricted, meaning that the main funds can only be used for certain purposes and we are only allowed use of the interest. The total investment must be kept at a level that will continue to sustain the demands of efficiently operating the library, maintaining the building and grounds, and caring for the Fogg Homestead.  These are the terms of the trust.

In recent years, cuts in support from the Town have forced us to draw far more from the trust than is prudent. For this current year, we were cut $23,000. The new budget, which is now being considered, may be cut beyond our requested amount.  While we understand the concerns created by a slow-growing economy and increased taxes, we believe the library plays an essential role in helping Eliot’s citizens during this downturn. We provide free entertainment for people of all ages in the form of books, DVDs, videos, magazines, and programs. We offer free story hours for children from toddler to school age, and a wide-range of children’s activities. We have a full schedule of book clubs, lectures,  and special guests. We offer free Internet and computer use, both for school and personal research projects and for job searches. We provide free tax preparation assistance. Stop in the library at any time and you will see it is a busy, lively, active place.

The funding we receive allows us to maintain this offering of services and programs, maintain our current hours, and care for the building. This year, we will need to make some significant building repairs, as is to be expected given that we celebrated our Centennial seven years ago.

Thank you for your past support of the library. As we enter these challenging times, we ask that you continue to assist us. All contributions in response to this letter will go directly to library operations. Donations in any amount are most welcome and are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Please watch for our upcoming events and join us for a fun time while helping us raise funds. If at all possible, please be there at town meeting on June 14th and vote in favor of our funding request.
